The Hon’ble Prime Minister of India has inaugurated Vidya Lakshmi Portal managed by NSDL e-governance Infrastructure Limited, Mumbai on 15th August 2015.

Shri Arun Jaitley, Honourable Union Finance Minister in his budget speech for FY 2015-16 said: "India is one of the youngest nations in the world with more than 54% of the total population below 25 years of age. Our young people have to be both, educated and employable for the jobs of the 21st century. The Prime Minister has explained how Skill India needs to be closely coordinated with Make in India. Yet, today less than 5% of our potential workforce gets formal skill training to be employable and stay employable. With a view to enabling all poor and middle-class students to pursue higher education of their choice without any constraint of funds, I propose to set up a fully IT-based Student Financial Aid Authority to administer and monitor Scholarship as well Educational Loan Schemes, through the Pradhan Mantri Vidya Lakshmi Karyakram. We will ensure that no student misses out on higher education for lack of funds. The IT-based mechanism under the Pradhan Mantri Vidya Lakshmi Karyakram is expected to provide to students a single window electronic platform for Scholarships and Educational Loans."

Vidya Lakshmi is a first of its kind portal for students seeking Education Loan. This portal has been developed under the guidance of Department of Financial Services, (Ministry of Finance), Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Human Resource Development) and Indian Banks Association (IBA).The portal has been developed and is maintained by NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited. Students through this links, https://www.vidyalakshmi.co.in/, can view, apply and track the education loan applications to banks anytime, anywhere by accessing the portal. The portal also provides linkages to National Scholarship Portal.

Blooming Beacon, an NGO run by the students of SRM Institute of Science and Technology, is making a giant leap to create history on the 1st of April 2018. Inspired and motivated by Arunachalam Muruganantham and being well aware of the difficulties faced by women in destitute areas of the city, this group of revolutionary students at SRM Institute of Science and Technology initially began a campaign to help the needy women, which now, in a very short span of time, has branched deep and wide. Blooming Beacon is now actively involved in activities with regard to Women Empowerment, Youth Affairs and Social Affairs as well. ‘We decided to take this on as a mission’, said Ayush Dadhich, President of Blooming Beacon, in an interview. Having raised funds and conducted numerous social campaigns until date, Blooming Beacon now stands as one of the well-known NGO organizations in the state, which has also been approved by the Government of Tamil Nadu. The campaigns conducted include ashram visits, medical camps, food distribution events, awareness programmes, street stores and what not!

Street Stores are shopping stalls for the needy, where Blooming Beacon piles up clothes, mattresses, bed sheets, footwear, and other women accessories including sanitary pads, all for free. The needy can come without a penny and go back with all they wished for! After two iterations of Street Store events that happened in 2015 and 2017, Blooming Beacon is now back with a bang – the next Street Store – Chapter 3 is fast approaching, this time with mammoth amounts of amenities for the needy.

On the 1st of April 2018, Blooming Beacon’s Street Store – Chapter 3 has been scheduled to take place at Sembakkam Municipality Community Hall, Kamarajapuram, Chennai from 9.30 AM to 5.00 PM. So, what makes this so unique? The Street Store – Chapter 3 is going to be the world’s biggest street store event that has ever taken place, which is going to be recognised and recorded by the Guinness Book of World Records and the Limca Book of Records. The aim of this massive Street Store is to satisfy at least 15,000 oppressed people by giving clothes, toys, mattresses, women accessories and a lot more. The Street Store – Chapter 3 also marks the launch of the campaign ‘Gift Pads – Gift Hygiene’, which targets to provide sanitary pads to 2000 women/girls for a year. This event is sure to give a dignified and worthy shopping experience to the needy, and Blooming Beacon will make sure that the needy who come to the campaign would get back with their hands full of amenities and hearts full of happiness. Preparations for the event are at heights, with students working days and nights. Undoubtedly, the Street Store – Chapter 3 by Blooming Beacon is going leave a prominent mark in the history of helping the needy.

Dear Students and Friends,

Very often in the academic world, faculty members and senior administrators discuss how to move up the ladder in terms of teaching, research and innovations; or in other words how to make their institutions the envy of the country or the world. At the same time, in the midst of the serious debate, there is also the realization that nurturing the main stake holders is perhaps the key to a successful institution.

This time let me talk of the critical role of two stake holders—the Alumni and the Industry, both of whom will have to be sought after aggressively and persuasively. An institution like SRM Institute of Science and Technology is quite aware of the inherent and potential strength of its alumni. SRM understands and accepts that the alumni is the perhaps the biggest stake holder that, among other things, provides stability and prospects for better growth. If the alumni is seen a critical component of an educational institution and much sought after, it is not without compelling reasons. In ways more than one, it is the alumni that speaks about the track record and strengths of an institution which in turn opens the door for better quality infrastructure, increased placement opportunities and entrepreneurship for future generations.

In India, for some reason, the partnership between Industry and educational institutions has not been to the extent to which it should be; but a phenomenon that is slowly being rectified. It is a two way street and a win-win situation for dynamic support and cooperation brings in new ideas and energy. Internships and project funding are mutually beneficial to the institution and the industry. The industry, for instance, will have a lot to benefit in having a close arrangement with SRM because of our student diversity, access to high class facilities, research laboratory and more importantly the use of our potential for innovation.

We are quite keen on building a long term growth strategy for SRMIST that will have the alumni and industry as our two main pillars that could benefit all stake holders, including students, parents, management and most importantly the society-at- large.

Good Luck And God Bless You All!

Dr. Sandeep Sancheti

Vice Chancellor,
SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University).

My Dear Students,

It gives me great pleasure to introduce myself—I am Dr. Sandeep Sancheti, the new Vice-Chancellor of SRM Institute of Science and Technology has formally taken charge on February 14, 2018. I had the opportunity to meet faculty members of the various streams of this institution on the very day and soon I shall have the opportunity of meeting you all.

I am sure all of you are extremely excited about studying in this great institution in whatever field you have chosen. I have been observing SRMIST for quite some time now, academically, professionally and personally being in touch with the top management and administrators. There is no question in my mind that this institution is at the top and this did not happen by chance. It is a meticulous and deliberate strategy that was put in place by the grand visionary of our Founder Chancellor who has built a number of first-rate educational institutions with the sole objective of imparting quality education but without losing track of what India is all about.

Personally, I have been in the portals of higher education for over three decades, in India and overseas; and I most certainly believe that SRMIST will not only be an institution of excellence but also an institution that is going to be the envy of India and the world. But all this is going to take careful planning and meticulous execution. Remember the adage “Rome was not built in a day?”—the same applies here. SRMIST is at the top and stays that way, not by accident. And we have to channelize our wisdom and energies to ensure that we aim and reach higher levels of teaching, learning, research, innovation, and entrepreneurship.  And at the end of the day, we have to be able to sit back with satisfaction that in the process of seeking higher platitudes we have not lost track of our societal connect.

In the days to come, I am going to be engaging with all the stakeholders directly, especially you: my students. This will enable us to understand the continuing trajectory of the University and identify better strategies so that SRM can make its way to position itself as an acknowledged top-notch international institution and thereby make all of us at SRM and the nation proud. As I begin my tenure here, I am confident that SRMIST will make rapid strides through our collective efforts.

Good Luck And God Bless You All!
