From The Desk Of The Vice Chancellor

My Dear Students,

It gives me great pleasure to introduce myself—I am Dr. Sandeep Sancheti, the new Vice-Chancellor of SRM Institute of Science and Technology has formally taken charge on February 14, 2018. I had the opportunity to meet faculty members of the various streams of this institution on the very day and soon I shall have the opportunity of meeting you all.

I am sure all of you are extremely excited about studying in this great institution in whatever field you have chosen. I have been observing SRMIST for quite some time now, academically, professionally and personally being in touch with the top management and administrators. There is no question in my mind that this institution is at the top and this did not happen by chance. It is a meticulous and deliberate strategy that was put in place by the grand visionary of our Founder Chancellor who has built a number of first-rate educational institutions with the sole objective of imparting quality education but without losing track of what India is all about.

Personally, I have been in the portals of higher education for over three decades, in India and overseas; and I most certainly believe that SRMIST will not only be an institution of excellence but also an institution that is going to be the envy of India and the world. But all this is going to take careful planning and meticulous execution. Remember the adage “Rome was not built in a day?”—the same applies here. SRMIST is at the top and stays that way, not by accident. And we have to channelize our wisdom and energies to ensure that we aim and reach higher levels of teaching, learning, research, innovation, and entrepreneurship.  And at the end of the day, we have to be able to sit back with satisfaction that in the process of seeking higher platitudes we have not lost track of our societal connect.

In the days to come, I am going to be engaging with all the stakeholders directly, especially you: my students. This will enable us to understand the continuing trajectory of the University and identify better strategies so that SRM can make its way to position itself as an acknowledged top-notch international institution and thereby make all of us at SRM and the nation proud. As I begin my tenure here, I am confident that SRMIST will make rapid strides through our collective efforts.

Good Luck And God Bless You All!

Dr. Sandeep Sancheti
Vice Chancellor,
SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University).

The British Council SRM Lecture series - Prof. Turi King delivers the Great Talks lecture

The British Council – SRM Lecture series saw yet another prominent scientist deliver the Great Talks lecture at SRM IST, on the relationship between Anthropology and Archaeology.

Taking cross-disciplinarity to a new high, Professor Turi King, Professor of Public Engagement and Reader in Genetics and Archaeology, University of Leicester, spoke about her work that connected Anthropology, the study of humans, early hominids and primates, such as chimpanzees and Archaeology, the study of the ancient and recent human past through material remains.

Her riveting talk to undergraduate students at the School of Biotechnology at SRM IST gave a fascinating oversight of the myriad applications of DNA fingerprinting.

Professor Turi King, a Geneticist of repute, started her academic career reading Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of Cambridge. It was here, that she became interested in how genetics could be used to answer archaeological and historical questions. She then went on to write an award-winning Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics examining the link between 'British hereditary surnames and the Y chromosome'. Since then, all of her work has combined genetics with history, archaeology, geography, forensics, and epidemiology. “DNA fingerprinting has been used as a way to trace surnames down through the generations, to prove links between families who didn’t know they were related or to show that a particular surname may have more than one origin”, she said. She spoke about how Genetic Genealogy is now a booming business and traced some famous cases she’s been involved in like on Sir David Attenborough’s family and that of Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States. She also spoke about her path-breaking work on genetic analysis which led to the identification of the skeletal remains of King Richard III.

Dr. Turi’s intrepid journey into research in two unconnected fields was an inspiration for the budding geneticists to view the field of genetics in a wider dimension. It’s not just about research in Genomics or Gene manipulation the one could hope in excel in, the boundaries are broader and interdisciplinarity offers new horizons for professional and career advancement for the genetic scientist.

MoU signed by ICF and SRMIST, Chennai and SRM University, Amaravati to develop a fuel cell driven train

SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), Chennai, SRM University, AP, Amaravati, and Integral Coach Factory (ICF) of Indian Railways are jointly developing a Fuel cell-based train prototype. The proposed fuel cell Powered Train will have Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) coupled with Lithium Ion Batteries and Super Capacitors.  Hydrogen-based PEM Fuel Cell is one of the best renewable energy sources with increasing efficiency and with zero Carbon dioxide emissions. Parallel development of Fuel cell powered switcher coach of 100 Horse Power as locomotive will be developed along with the passenger train with two coaches. Each coach of 65 Passenger capacity operating at a speed of 75 Kmph.

PEMFC operates at a maximum output power of approximately 30kW for switcher coach and one MW peak power and continuous power of 650 KW as a prime mover. Transient power in excess will be stored in the Lithium Ion Batteries and Supercapacitors to cater the needs of electrical requirements for the coaches.  The Supercapacitors will be utilized to initiate traction for the fuel cell train due to their high and fast discharging capacity.  Switcher coach may not need supercapacitors.

Six Numbers of Compressed – Hydrogen Storage tanks of 0.4-meter diameter and four meters long each will be employed for the proposed Hydrogen Powered Train.  Storage tank will have 60 kgs of hydrogen compressed at a pressure of 350 bars.  The hydrogen tanks with all necessary safeguards will be installed below the roof of the train. In case of switcher coach, hydrogen tanks will be kept inside the coach itself.

Lithium-Ion Batteries and Super Capacitors will be placed below the Coach.  The Fuel Cells will be stacked in one of the coaches to avoid electrical wiring and mechanical design complications. The Hydrogen-Powered Train will not produce any greenhouse gases and will be less noisy than conventional trains operated by diesel or electricity. Several technical challenges will arise while designing and developing the Hydrogen Powered Train and will be overcome by the continuous efforts of ICF Engineers and SRM Faculty Members and Students.  This exciting and challenging Project on switcher coach is expected to be completed by March / April 2019 and operate in loco, shell, furnishing units of ICF.  The Fuel cell driven passenger train is expected to operate for public transportation by December 2019.

MoU has been signed on Saturday, 24th February 2018 between Integral Coach Factory (ICF) and SRMIST, Chennai and SRM University, AP – Amaravati.
