The ICI Student Chapter, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur, have been actively organizing events such as technical talks, seminars, workshops, social, communal events and other social outreach projects in the academic year 2018-1019.The contributions of ICI Student Chapter, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur, for the betterment of society through the means of technology outreach has been recognized in the Concrete Day Celebrations and awarded the best ICI Student Chapter award for the same. The ICI Student Chapter, SRMIST has previously secured the Best Student Chapter at national level for the year 2016-2017.
The event was organized by Indian Concrete Institute (Chennai Center) and UltraTech Cement Limited on 17th of September 2019 at Hotel Green Park, Vadapalani, Chennai. The program started with a warm welcome note from the chairperson of ICI (CC) Dr. Radhakrishna G. Pillai, Professor, IITM which was followed by the most awaited lecture of the event, the “Recycled C&D Waste materials in Construction” was delivered by Dr. Chrisian J. Engelsen, Sr. Scientist, SINTEF Community (Infrastructure and Materials) Norway. On this concrete day celebrations ceremony, the award for the Best Outstanding ICI (CC) Student Chapter was given to SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur. The award was received by Dr. K. Gunasekaran Professor, Dr.P.R. Kannan Rajkumar Associate Professor, Mr. Ganapathy Ramasamy N. Assistant Professor, Ms. C. Pavithra . Assistant Professor, M. Aravind, R. Rohit Raman, Upasna Reddy, Avantika Bais and G. Pennarasi, representing the faculty and students of SRM IST.
Founder Chancellor of SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Dr. T R Paarivendhar, MP released the Waste Management Books at SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur campus recently.
The event was presided over by Dr. Vinit Vijay Dani from Mahatama Gandhi National Council of Rural Education. SRMIST is also planning to introduce an MBA in Waste Management and Social Entrepreneurship. The curriculum and syllabus for the course will soon be announced.
This is the first official launch of the books and the release event was held at SRM. The books, which consists of 5 parts, are a compilation of various things done by various people on waste management.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chancellor said, “Our Prime Minister and the present government is very serious about management of waste. When we waste material then we should take the pain of managing it. We should be conscious about our acts and it needs to be taught to others. We are now in a situation where we have to teach the younger generation on waste segregation and management.”
MHRD Minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal who was in the city recently convey his support and blessing for this MBA programme and the book launch event. He wished SRMIST the best wishes in their endeavor.
Present on the occasion was SRMIST’s Vice Chancellor Dr Sandeep Sancheti, Registrar Dr N Sethuraman, Director (Management) Dr Michael J Barnes, Joint Director (Research) Dr SRS Prabhakaran and other faculty members of the Institution.
SRMIST Director Management, Dr Michael J Barnes said, “SRMIST can soon become a role model in waste management. The MBA in Waste Management is an AICT approved syllabus and will be multidisciplinary. This is a relatively new field and there are over 17,000 job openings in the senior and management level in waste management.”
It is yet another feather in the well-known department of Computer Science and Engineering department as two of its students have stepped into world-renowned computer related behemoths such as Microsoft and Google respectively.
Final year student Ms. Pragya Saxena has been placed in the Research & Development (R&D) department as an intern. The internship period is from 04th June to 27th July 2018. The stipend provided for the same was INR 45,000
Third-year student Pushkal Katara has been selected for The Google Summer of Code 2018 under a remote internship of 3 months from 14th May to 15th August 2018 with a stipend of USD $2400.

Two Computing students receive training as TA’s under the guidance of NUS
SRMIST proves itself to be in the forefront of competence yet again through it students who had been trained by NUS, Singapore to function as teaching assistants, enabling the bridging of knowledge gaps and facilitating better learning among their peers.
Global Academic Internship Programme (GAIP) is a 3-week academic internship program which was conducted by Corporate Gurukul at the National University of Singapore from 2 June 2018 to 23rd June 2018. Participants of this program worked with industry professionals from Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) Education, Asia Pacific and Professors from National University of Singapore (NUS).
Two of our students - Vignesh Prabhakar and Abhilash Pandurangan were selected as Teaching Assistants (TAs) for this program based on their performance in the previous batch of GAIP winter rollout and upon recommendation from the professors at NUS. Their role was to aid the professors with the lecture sessions, to bridge the learning gap by teaching the pre-requisites and as well to guide the students with the projects which were done as a part of the program. Corporate Gurukul sponsored their visit to Singapore by providing them with a daily allowance and they worked along with the NUS professors during the program.
The Urban Farm Centre was visited by the Kidzee Play School children from Guduvancherry on 28.09.19. The Principal of the School, Mr. Ilango, and the Facilitators Ms. Sangeetha, Ms. Kalpana, Ms. Mythili, the attender Ms. Krishnaveni accompanied the 28 young children in an age group of 3 to 5 years old. On the same day, Modern Secular Play school students from Pandoor, Guduvancherry with 16 students accompanied by the Teachers Ms. Punithavathy, Ms. Devi, Ms. Uma Maheswari and Ms. Sundari visited the centre for the children to get introduced to the different colours in nature.
The purpose of the visit was GO GREEN Activity day celebration. The children came with the Pluck cards with the theme Go GREEN, and went for rally inside the Urban Farm Centre. The children were very much excited to see the different colour flowers, the Yellow Marigold, Violet Balsam, the pink, orange, white and yellow table roses, the Orchids growth habit and lawns greenery. They were fascinated about the butterflies and honey bees swarming around the flowers. One child was worried that he doesn’t have space for growing plants at his home and said a wow that the centre has so many flowers. The Urban Farm Centre has set an example for the greenery concept and stuck a memory on the young minds.
