1. Training workshop on Practical Approach in Design of Buildings, 21st July 2017.

The students of the Structural Engineering had undergone a practical training workshop in “PRACTICAL APPROACH IN DESIGN OF BUILDINGS” by Mr.G.A.Hariharanath, Chief Executive, GA Consultants. The workshop was started on 21st July 2017 and ended by 17.09.17 for a period of 15 days. The session was started at sharp 09.30 AM in the morning and ended at 02.00 PM in the afternoon with a short tea break of ten to fifteen minutes in the middle of the session on all the days. The students were able to gain knowledge in analysis and design of RCC Structures which includes the load distribution of slabs to beams, the design of slabs, beams, columns, footings and raft foundations along with wind and seismic effect on structures.

2. Industrial Visit to Orchid Pharmaceutical and Chemical Ltd, Alanthur, Chennai, 8th August 2017.

Orchid Pharmaceuticals Chennai, is one of the largest antibiotic manufacturing plants located in Alathur, south of Chennai and is specialized in the manufacturing of cephalosporin active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). It is located in a large industrial estate, the complex is massive, has the most modern manufacturing units in India that is specialised in manufacturing of a wide range of cephalosporin bulk actives. The plant has the capability of handling highly complex reactions and has all the required machineries. Our main objective was to visit the pollution control and treatment facilities in Orchid pharmaceutical and chemicals ltd. The industrial unit is equipped with sophisticated quality control equipment's and “zero discharge” environment-friendly effluent treatment plant. The plant visit was arranged by Department of Civil Engineering, SRM University, Kattankulathur for I year and II-year M. Tech Environmental Engineering students. It was held on 8th of August 2017 around 22 students of both years from M. Tech Environmental Engineering attended the visit accompanied with 3 staffs from the department. During the visit, we were given safety helmets since we had to move around the unit. The session included a presentation by the officials of Orchid Pharma on the waste treatment and air quality monitoring done in the unit. We were given a brief introduction to the wastewater treatment and the disposal techniques and the gaseous treatment techniques followed in the industry. Later on, we were taken for a plant visit inside the industry. The visit was coordinated by Dr. J.S Sudarsan, Assistant Professor (S.G), and Mr.K. Prasanna, Assistant Professor (Sr.G), Department of Civil Engineering, SRM University, Kattankulathur. 

3.Inaugural Function and Guest Lecture, 17th August 2017.

The Inaugural function began with the Invocation at 10.30 A.M, followed by the welcome address given by the ASCE Student Vice President Sai Teja. Dr. K. S. Satyanarayanan, HOD, then addressed the gathering by introducing the Chief Guest, Dr.A.N.Brijesh Nair, President, ASCE, India Section-Southern Region and the other luminaries Dr. S.Basil Gnanappa, Secretary, ASCE, India Section-Southern  Region , Er(Prof)  P.Rajayogan, ASCE, India Section-Southern Region,  Immediate  Past President 2016, Mr.Gopan Pillai, Director and COO Hochtief (India) Pvt. Ltd. Mr. Brijesh Nair shared many valuable thoughts which gave a lucid idea for fundraising and conducting the upcoming events under the umbrella of ASCE. Following which the ASCE Student Chapter was inaugurated by Chief Guest Mr.A.N.Brijesh Nair after which Dr.S.Basil Gnanapa gave us a motivational speech on the ethics to be followed as a simple person.

Following which, Er. (Prof) P.Rajayogan, interacted with the gathering and explained the importance of taking responsibilities and shared his experience on various aspects of being a part of ASCE. Mr.Gopanpillai shared his life experience and discussed on the poor safety measures at construction sites in India. Vishalatchi Ramasamy, Final year student (BTech) thanked everyone on the dais by a proposing the vote of thanks. The Inaugural function was wrapped up by singing the National Anthem.

4.Guest Lecture on “Environmental Issues & Its perspectives”, 8th September 2017.

On 8th September 2017, a guest lecture was given by Dr. K. K. Satpathy, Head, Environment and Safety Division, IGCAR, Kalpakkam, on Environmental Issues and its Perspectives.

The dignitary was introduced by Dr. K. S. Satyanarayanan, H.O.D., Dept. of Civil Engineering, and Student President. The lecture began by discussing major problems like Climatic changes and Global warming. He further gave us a lucid picture on emerging problems such as melting of glaciers, a rise in Population, rise in Sea, Tsunami etc. He quoted that, “Energy is the primary and deciding standard.” Referring to several statistical data’s and analysis related to different aspects and fields, in comparison with India, other countries and World averages.

Further, this lecture proceeded by pressurizing on how these factors influence the balance between different environments. He elaborated us the importance of rainwater harvesting, in developing nations such as India, and it’s wise usage on domestic, agriculture and industries. He described the nuclear facilities available at Kalpakkam. And also threw light on the studies that are carried on at Kalpakkam i.e. study on forest, plankton, ecology, biodiversity, erosion, fish diversity and barcode. The lecture came to an end presenting the memento to the Chief Guest Dr. K. K. Satpathy by Dr. K. S. Satyanarayanan, Head of the Department, Dept. of Civil Engineering.

5.Guest Lecture on “Climate change and Mitigation through Microbial approach” - 8th September 2017.

On 8th September 2017 a lecture on “Climate change and Mitigation through Microbial approach” was conducted by the Department of Civil Engineering at the CRC Seminar Hall. The Chief Guests, Dr.Krishnamurthi Kannan, Senior Principal Scientist, EISD, CSIR-NEERI, Nehru Marg arrived. The lecture started with Dr. K. S. Satyanarayanan, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering introducing the Chief Guest which was followed by Dr. Krishnamurthi Kannan giving the students his presentation on climate change. He explained the concepts of climate change and his work on algae fuel. Dr. Krishnamurthi Kannan has done various projects including a Bio-Cementing project on work with Dr. K. S. Satyanarayanan(HOD). He gave a brief introduction to his project works and on-going projects and his interest area. He mostly focused towards Carbon Sequestration by various approaches amongst which algae sequestration seemed to be the most preferred means of CO2 sequestration. He explained how climate change can affect the environment and also the recent examples of hazard occurred due to climatic change.

The idea of algae sequestration and usage of vegetable oil for biofuel production was the most innovative and sustainable way for the production of energy. This attracted student’s interest in this methodology but also inspired them to work for the same during their course duration and to select the above topic as their area of interest and research. Further, he gave a history about students who had worked under him during their course duration, teachers and colleagues who have been working with him in his on-going project. He also gave encouragement to all B.tech. students as well as M.Tech. students to go for the above research area as an interest specially for Environment Engineering Students of M.tech. He also urged students to work with him in his on-going research and agreed for allowing interested students to work with him in his laboratory. The presentation was followed by an interactive session where the students were free to clarify their doubts and the students were encouraged to take projects related to the topic. It was followed by the HOD giving a memento to the honorable Chief Guest. The lecture ended with a vote of thanks.

6.One Day Workshop on Experimental Studies on Geo and Structural Materials, 9th September 2017.

A One Day Workshop was conducted by Department of Civil Engineering, Students from various colleges in Chennai attended the workshop (Jerusalem College of Engineering, B.S.Abdur Rahman University, GKM College of Engineering and Technology, Adhiparasakthi EngineeringCollege, Sri Sai Ram Engineering College). Ms. Dhivya Krishnan, Assistant Professor gave the introduction speech about the workshop. Dr.Satyanarayanan, Head of Department, Department of Civil Engineering conveyed the importance of this workshop and his wishes to students as they were blessed to be a part of this wonderful day. The workshop commenced with a warm and motivational introduction.

Dr .P.T.Ravichandran, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering gave a presentation on “Geosynthetics and its properties” followed by which Dr.K.Gunasekaran, Professor Department of Civil Engineering gave a presentation on “Special concrete using M-sand and Coconut shell aggregates”.

After a Tea break, there was a Hands-on Training session in Geotechnical lab and Concrete and highway lab. The students were divided into 6 batches, each batch consisting of 5 students (one student from every college in a batch). There were two practical sessions (One before lunch and one after the lunch), Various experiments on geotextiles, geosynthetics and Special concrete using M-sand and Coconut shell aggregates were performed by the students in Geotechnical lab and Concrete and highway lab under the guidance of trained faculties.

The practical Session was followed by a tea break after which students were taken for the lab visit where they were shown state of the art equipment and advanced tests which enriched them with lot of exposure and there was a discussion between the students and faculties where students cleared all their doubts and then the certificates were distributed.

7.Guest Lecture on “International Standards on Structural Architecture and Interior Design”, 21st September 2017.     

A lecture on “International Standards on Structural Architecture and Interior Design” was conducted by the Department of Civil Engineering at the CRC Seminar Hall presented by “Space Designers”, SPACE CADD. The lecture started around 10:30 AM which was given by Mr. Augustine Abraham, Chief of SPACE CADD.  His lecture was based on the software which is necessary for a Civil engineer to be ready for the industry as well as to be updated with the time. “Software Development” is now the need of the hour, for an engineer to be efficient as well as to deal with modern building methods. This was basically a demo session on software training.

He explained his on-going real-life projects such as Mr. Kannan’s Residential Building, Restaurant at Potheri as well as a project at Tambaram. He also displayed his earlier completed projects at different areas like Phoenix Mall which was made and analyzed on software which was finally constructed by them. He classified software into various types which are- Planning (AutoCAD), Structural (STAAD.pro, Etabs, SAFE, ANSYS CIVIL), Modelling (Revit Architecture, 3DMaxs), Project Management (MS Project, Prime Vera).

According to him, usage of software in Civil Engineering is to save time, avoid errors, maintain accuracy, ensure safety and provide flexibility to make a change over a short duration. The steps of planning, drawing and analyzing on software which is then showcased before the customer and then is sent for approval to CMDA, only after which construction work can be made into progress was elaborated by him.

At the end of the Demo Training Session, he expounded the importance of each software that had a specific function and usage in Civil Domain. With this he ended his lecture and registration form for joining Space CADD, Brochure and sample Project Plan was distributed to each student present in the seminar hall.

8.Guest lecture on Civil Engineering Career And Opportunities, 22nd September 2017

A special guest was invited to the Department of Civil Engineering, Mr. Sampath Raman, AMIE (India), BSc Hons UK, MIS (India), FRICS UK, Associate director, MACE. His career and devotion to what he is doing inspired each student. Dr. K. Gunasekaran, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering introduced the chief guest and conveyed his wishes to students as they were blessed to be a part of the guest lecture of the day. Mr. Sampath Raman started his lecture by sharing his experience in the field.

The objectives of this lecture as stated by Mr. Sampath Raman includes the key features of some of the projects in which he worked in Dubai and various disciplines in building project career option in Civil with focus on quantity surveying. Some of his projects in Dubai include Jumeirah beach residence, Business bay executive towers and One Za’abeel-ICD which is in under construction. The Jumeirah beach residence was constructed in 2003 over a length of 1.7 km. This includes high rise buildings from 36 floors to 55 floors. Business bay executive towers which were started in 2005 also includes 10 high rise towers and 60 residential villas. This is a combination of residential and commercial building. Some of the statistical data related to the above projects were also shared with the students. He also shared about his current project in Dubai which is One Za’abeel – ICD. It is in the heart of Dubai which includes of two towers intersected by a highway. One tower is of mixed use and the other one is purely residential. The two towers are connected by a cantilever horizontal steel structure which is the world’s largest cantilever designed until now. He shared his biggest challenges which he faced during the execution of this project and gave an outline on foundation of this project. He also stated about the Signature towers which was designed by Zaha Hadid.

Then he stated about the various disciplines in Civil Engineering in which students can get exposure and about the career opportunities in the field of Civil. Then he introduced students about the Quantity surveying – it’s functions. Thus, he ended his lecture and the hall was left for queries. Finally, the guest was honored with a memento. Finally, Mr. S. Pradeep, Assistant Professor (Sr.G), presented the vote of thanks

9.One Day Workshop on Experimental Studies on Geosynthetic and Special Concrete, 23rd September 2017.

A One Day Workshop was conducted by Department of Civil Engineering, Students from various colleges in Chennai attended the workshop. (Surya Group of Institutions, Vikiravandi, Villupuram VELS University, Pallavaram, Chennai Bannari Amman Institute of Technology, Sathyamangalam, Erode TJS Engineering College, Peruvoyal, Gummudipoondi Excel Engineering College, Komarapalayam ). Dr.Satyanarayanan, Head of Department of Civil Engineering conveyed the importance of this workshop and conveyed his wishes to students as they were blessed to be a part of this wonderful day. The workshop commenced with a warm and motivational introduction.

10.Site visit to Ready Mix Concrete Plant, 27th September 2017

B.Tech and M.Tech Civil Engineering students were taken for site-visit to RMC plant on 27th September 2017. In India, there are only very few industries in RMC field. NUVOCO VISTAS Corp. Ltd. (formerly known as LAFARGE) is a leading MNC which has a strong presence in India. Initially, they gave an introduction to the plant and its working through a power point presentation. After a break for refreshment, they took the students to the site explaining the parts and its working. They explained about the mix proportioning and the material procurement that they take up depending upon the requirement. Site-mixed concrete has serious limitations as far as quality of concrete and speed of construction are concerned. Generally, cost remains the driving factor in deciding the award of construction contracts and very little or no premium is placed on quality. As a result, many structures have shown premature deterioration and the cost of repairs and rehabilitation is proving prohibitive. Now growing realization is surfacing that quality and consistency cannot be achieved by relying on age-old techniques of construction. The growth prospects of RMC in India in this context looks very bright but the RMC has not maintained the desired pace of growth in spite of this realization due to numerous constraints. They introduced concrete delivered in bags which was a new technique in the industry. The students were able to gain knowledge about Ready Mix Concrete and its effective usage in mega projects.

11.Site visit to World Trade Centre Construction Site, OMR Road, 27th September 2017.

B. Tech and M.Tech Civil Engineering students along with faculty in-charge Mr.Jaganathan, Assistant Professor, was taken for the site visit to World Trade Centre Construction Site, OMR Road on 27th September 2017. At the time of industrial visit, the excavation process was going on. The depth of excavation was 3 meters. Mat reinforcement was put. A temporary treatment plant had been installed for the purpose of making concrete readily available at site avoiding computation. Adequate safety measures were adhered to by the participants during the industrial visit. The company, as a matter of their own safety procedure, provided us with safety shoes, helmet, apron, and goggles. Strict instructions were given for us to maintain the boundaries to ensure safety. The engineers at the site made efforts to explain us the detail of the work going on the site and cleared all doubts. Brigade brings the world’s most coveted business address to Chennai. Joining the ranks of 334 WTCs present across the globe, WTC Chennai will be the tallest commercial establishment in the city. It is a complete business eco-system with residences, hotel, and retail space. The development consists of a built-up area of 1.8 million sq.ft spread across two towers. Visiting such a construction site gave exposure to students about the extent to which Civil Engineers can go.

12.Guest Lecture by Rishabh Sharma, Alumni of SRM University, on 28th September 2017.

A student guest was invited to the Department of Civil Engineering, Mr. Rishabh Sharma. Who is an alumni of the SRM who was successful in getting a prestigious job in L&T during the previous year placements and presently is a part of the Officers Training Academy in the Indian Army. The Head of the department proudly introduced him and said that the presence of a student like him not only motivated the students to present there but also the teachers. Mentioning about his earlier achievements he said that Mr.Rishabh had a good balance between his extra-curricular activities and academics which got him into so many opportunities during the placements. While as a student in SRM he had also received the scholarship for his NCC recognitions. HOD Sir shared his immense joy in welcoming his own student with such great achievements and also inspired all the other students to present there to be like him one day and to reach the heights of success.

The session was then taken over by Rishabh Sharma who guided the students and shared all his experiences regarding placements and his life in L&T. He told that initially, he was not very clear about his future job plans when he newly joined college, but he knew that he had to do something extraordinary in order to stand out in a crowd of 5000. He also shared that he was a part of The Republic day camp of 2015 and was also selected for a youth exchange program where he realized that this was the life he had dreamt of. And accordingly, he appeared for all the interviews and got selected in all the IT companies. He said that the companies were influenced mostly by speaking skills, confidence, personality and his way of presentation. He greatly emphasized the aptitude classes in SRM and said that it had been very helpful throughout his series of placements. Then he spoke about his L&T placement scenario where the first round was aptitude again. He was able to crack the L&T interview out of the many bright students present there only because he was able to tackle real-life situations. During the interview as he said he was only asked few of the basic questions of civil but was given many other real-life situations where he was tested as to how much practically he could use his knowledge. Then he started speaking about his transformation from a student to a real-life engineer. He got the most prestigious package of Mumbai Metro and was given the Department of Heavy Civil Infrastructure which gave him a platform to learn more how to deal with man and materials. All these taught him to manage people, learn new technical things and tackle real-life site problems. He added that after much experience in field job, he was now going to start his new life in the Indian Army after securing AIR 1. The various instances that he shared from his experience made the students realize the changes that they will need to face in the corporate and industrial world after college. He concluded by saying that the real engineering world is a lot more challenging, but we must be ever ready to grasp knowledge wherever possible so that, later on, it can benefit us in our career. With this, the one-hour session came to an end and the hall was left for queries. Many students got their doubts cleared regarding the placement scenario and were well guided and inspired by this interactive session.

13. One Day Workshop On Practical Training in Geotextile and Lightweight Concrete, 7th October 2017.

A One Day Workshop was conducted by the Department of Civil Engineering, Students from various colleges in Chennai attended the workshop ( Christ College of Engineering and Technology, Puducherry E.S Engineering College, Villupuram Sri Krishna College of Engineering and Technology, Coimbatore Sri Ramanujar Engineering College Christ The King Engineering College, Karamadai, Coimbatore) Dr.Satyanarayanan, Head of Department of Civil Engineering conveyed the importance of this workshop and his wishes to students as they were blessed to be a part of this wonderful day. The workshop commenced with a warm and motivational introduction.

14. Guest lecture on Geospatial Applications for Water Resources & Environment by Alumni Dr. Abdul Hakeem, on 12th October 2017

The session began with a welcome address by Dr. Deeptha Thattai, Associate Professor of Civil Department who introduced the special guest cum Alumni, Dr. Abdul Hakeem. She introduced him as the senior most alumni who belonged to the second batch (1990th batch) of SRM Engineering College. He has done his Masters in Irrigation Water Management from Anna University and currently, he is the Head of “Water Informatics & Quality Division” in National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) Hyderabad. He has done 23 years of service in this field and has more than 15 publications and above 30 presentations in International Symposiums. His field of interest is mainly on Geospatial applications and on Hydrological Models, Water quality and water informatics.  He is also the recipient of ISRO Team Excellence Award.

Mr. Hakeem started the session with a brief introduction on remote sensing. He divided his lecture into two parts – about the working of ISRO in the field of remote sensing and on the specific applications of remote sensing in water zone and environment. He gave a brief sketch about the growth of ISRO in 20-25 years. The major activities of ISRO are launch-vehicle building, and satellite building based on different applications. There is one Indian remote sensing (IRS) program under ISRO & INSAT, GSAT Program i.e. for communication and weather satellites. He showed with images how ISRO has grown from the INSAT series of satellite started in 1983 with only 2 bands of information and 4 images per day to how much advanced we are now with INSAT 3 series (2013) which has got 6 bands of information, better resolution with 19 channels and 48 images per day. He informed that in case of remote sensing satellites the 1st one was launched in 1988(IRSIA) and from there ISRO has improved the capabilities to 0.8m resolution satellite data in 5/310 days using Cartosat -2 (2007). He also spoke about the exclusive microwave sensors that ISRO has developed which could even see through the clouds and the exclusive satellites for the ocean and wind-related studies. He explained about the space tech inputs and the various sets of input data like optical data, microwave, multi-spatial data, digital elevation models, GAGAN enabled positioning etc which are corrected as ortho-image. This information is fed into different models which are hosted by various geo-platforms. This information is made available using which a suite of applications are developed.

After a brief idea about ISRO and its working, he gave a huge amount of information about the practical applications of remote sensing. The first application he spoke about was “Surface Water resources”. It can be used for water assessment, to monitor inland fishery potential, hydrological drought, sedimentation survey and provides long-term data for climate analysis. Remote sensing gives an idea of the changing shapes and sizes of reservoirs with which reservoir capacity estimation is done and this is useful for proper planning and for irrigation purpose. The second application as he said is to monitor groundwater potential by using the information available in the Bhujal Portal in order to determine the depth range and expected yield range for the groundwater available in different areas for the country. He also gave an idea about how geospatial tech supported National missions like the Ganga rejuvenation. The third application he described was for monitoring of projects. Remote sensing can be used to monitor whether the money invested in developmental projects is properly used or not. It will give the actual data about the progress of construction like the length of the canal that is constructed etc without any manipulation. It can also locate critical gap areas in canal network and can analyse irrigation potentials. It provides near-real-time inputs for improved irrigation management which is used to find the onset and extensions of harvest, estimation of the crop under different time and for identification of crop type grown based on which revenue can be collected. Fourthly as he said remote sensing has also got its application in snowmelt runoff forecasting in Himalayan basins. It analyses snow extent and snow depth in order to estimate the amount of snowmelt that would flow into reservoirs so that everything can be pre-planned based on that. RS data also monitors the glacial lakes in Himalayan regions for any kind of failures so that precautions can be taken beforehand.  Remote sensing also provides long-term data for climate analysis and information can be obtained from the National Information System for climate and Earth Sciences. It even helps in forecasting and warnings for flood, landslides, cyclones, earthquakes etc. Lastly, he mentioned the use of remote sensing even in the field of Solar Energy Modelling and harnessing. Though remote sensing has got a wide range of applications, the few examples which he explained through his presentation was enough for the students to understand it and develop the interest in this field. It has inspired them to think of researchers, projects, internships or career in this field. He encouraged the students to use such technologies and work for societal development. At the end of the session, he shared information about the geo-platforms that are available for the students and shared their URLs so that it could help in future. After this there was a query session and he all cleared their doubts. Thus, the session ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. Deeptha Thattai after which the guest was honoured with a memento.

15.One Day Workshop Testing on Geo Reinforcement Material and Coconut Shell Concrete, 14th October 2017.

A One Day Workshop was conducted by the Department of Civil Engineering, Students from various colleges in Chennai attended the workshop. (S.A. Engineering College, Chennai Thirumalai Engineering College, Kanchipuram, Adhi College of Engineering and Technology, Kancheepuram, SCSVMV University, Kancheepuram, Kongu Engineering College, Erode). Dr.K.S.Satyanarayanan, Head of Department of Civil Engineering conveyed the importance of this workshop and his wishes to students as they were blessed to be a part of this wonderful day. The workshop commenced with a warm and motivational introduction.

16. One Day Workshop on Laboratory Studies on Geo-Material and Special Concrete,   21st October 2017.

A One Day Workshop was conducted by the Department of Civil Engineering, Students from various colleges in Chennai attended the workshop. (Bharath University, Chennai, Hindustan University, Chennai, Dr. MGR University, Chennai, St.Peters University, Chennai, Christ Institute of Technology, Puducherry). Dr.K.S.Satyanarayanan, Head of Department of Civil Engineering conveyed the importance of this workshop and his wishes to students as they were blessed to be a part of this wonderful day. The workshop commenced with a warm and motivational introduction.

17. Industrial visit to Ranipet Tannery Effluent Treatment Company Ltd. (RANITEC) at Ranipet and Leather industry at Vaniyambadi.  10th, November 2017.

The industrial visit to Ranipet Tannery Effluent Treatment Company Ltd. (RANITEC) at Ranipet  and Leather industry at Vaniyambadi on 10.11.2017 was initiated and arranged by Dr.J.S.Sudarsan, Assistant Professor (S.G) and Mr.K.Prasanna Assistant Professor (Sr.G) for M.Tech Environmental Engineering students as part of curriculum to have a practical experience in the field of Industrial Wastewater Treatment and concept of Common Effluent Treatment Plant(CETP) adopted in Vellore district especially for tannery units.  The team was accompanied by Dr.J.S.Sudarsan, Assistant Professor (S.G), Mr.S.Dhanasekar, Assistant Professor (O.G) and Ms. V. Mirunalini Assistant Professor (O.G) along with 12 students and they visited two places in Vellore districts on the same day. The plant commissioning since 1995 and was designed to handle about 4500 cum/day of effluent, making it one of the largest Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) for tannery wastewater in the country. The effluent from the tanneries spread over an area of 4-5 sq.km is collected and transported to the treatment plant through a system of pumping stations, pressure and gravity mains. The chemicals traditionally used for tanning have been derived from plants, whereas the most common process nowadays is a combination of chrome salts (chrome tanning). Soaking is the process the preserved raw hides regain their normal water contents. Dirt, manure, blood, preservatives (sodium chloride, bactericides) etc are removed and then the material is subjected to pickling, it is consisting of increases the acidity of the hide to a pH of 3, enabling chromium tannins to enter the hide. Salts are added to prevent the hide from swelling. then Chromium tanned hides are often retained - during which the desirable properties of more than one tanning agent are combined - and treated with dye and fat to obtain the proper filling, smoothness, and color is considered as the important process named as Wet blue. Finishing operator which involved splitting, settling, finishing are done.

18.One day international Seminar on "Trends in Urban Planning, Sustainable Development and Environment Management (TUPSUD 2017)", 15th November 2017.

Department of Civil Engineering, SRM University, Kattankulathur jointly organized a one day International Seminar on "Trends in Urban Planning, Sustainable Development and Environment Management (TUPSUD 2017)" in collaboration with NITTTR, Chennai on 15.11.2017 at Dr.T.P Ganesan Auditorium of SRM University. In this international event four main themes namely urban planning, urban infrastructure planning and management, Environmental planning and smart city were the focus of discussions. The conference covers several sub-themes like Remote sensing GIS,GPS applications for urban planning and management, Sustainable urban development and approaches, urban water management ,urban wastewater and sewage management , solid waste management, urban transportation planning, intelligent transport systems, public, private participation for urban development , Green buildings, smart homes and smart public transport systems. Participants are experts in Town Planning, Safety and Environment, Research and Development from around 18 countries like Afghanistan, Botswana, Cuba, Egypt, Iraq, Kenya, Mauritius, Sudan, Tanzania, Vietnam, Zimbabwe, Cuba, Namibia. Indian institutions include IIT Palakkad, Mysore University, Andhra University, to mention a few

Dr. SUDHINDRA NATH PANDA, Director, NITTTR, Chennai was the chief guest for the International event. This seminar through light on smart city development, urban planning and management, urban wastewater management, green building in the Indian context and in the global context and also act as a platform to create a link between technocrats, Researcher, Stake-holders, Government agencies and students. The deliberations helped to create awareness among the public on several common issues like urban water management, wastewater management, solid waste management and it will indirectly help to achieve the goal of SWACHH Bharat.

20. Guest Lecture on Contracts Management in Construction Industry, 23rd January 2018

A Guest Lecture was organized in the Department of Civil Engineering for Btech and Mtech students titled “Contracts Management in Construction Industry” in CRC Seminar hall. The guest for the hour was Er. Pabak Mukhopadhyay, formerly Vice President & BU Head of Bulk Material handling EPC Division of Larsen and Toubro Ltd. This program gave an insight to Construction Engineering and Management in Construction Industry to all the students and faculty members who gathered for the lecture. The presentation inspired many to learn more on the title. The speaker related the topics to the actual happenings of the sight making the session more live and receptive. He encouraged the young minds to step in the field of Management as it’s the open ground for young minds to explore. The hall was soon let for the doubts to be cleared and students clarified their basic and simple doubts. The lecture came to an end presenting the momento to the Chief Guest Er. Pabak Mukhopadhyay by Dr. K. S. Satyanarayanan, H.O.D Department of Civil Engineering.

21. Guest Lecture on "Atmospheric observations show little growth in India’s methane emissions", 25th January 2018.

A guest lecture was organised in the Department of Civil Engineering and to deliver the guest lecture we had Dr. Yogesh Tiwari, Scientist-D at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune. Who had recently published a paper in Nature Communications. The session took place in 1st floor Seminar Hall, CRC Block. The session began with a warm welcome speech to the guest of the day and to the gathering. Soon it was taken over by the guest in which he discussed about the atmospheric methane (CH4). It is of chief concern as it is the second largest contributor to the global warming after carbon dioxide. India is currently thought to have the second largest CH4 emissions of any country but emissions have not been verified from the ‘top-down’ using atmospheric observations from within the country or a high-resolution modeling approach. There are significant differences in the emissions calculated by various ‘bottom-up’ global inventories, further highlighting the need for top-down verification.

Their results suggested little growth in Indian emissions during the period 2010-2015, in contrast to positive growth suggested by global inventories. Results that he presented showed that the magnitude of top-down emissions is consistent with the emissions reported by India in its National Communications to the world and is 30% smaller than global inventories such as EDGAR. These findings demonstrate the need for more robust bottom-up accounting, using country-specific data and more advanced accounting methodologies. These findings highlight the scope of top-down evaluation of emissions inventories for regions of the world that are critical for global climate and policy but are generally under-studied. His thoughts gave an insight to the students as they were able to get the intensity of change taking place. The session got over with interactive questions and answers. The lecture came to an end presenting the momento to the Chief Guest by Dr. K. S. Satyanarayanan, H.O.D Department of Civil Engineering.

26. Refresher session on handling Total Station, Digital Theodolite and GPS for the faculty members handling Survey Lab and Survey Camp, 28th  February 2018

We have organized a refresher session on handling Total Station, Digital Theodolite and GPS for the faculty members handling Survey Lab and Survey Camp on 28-02-.2018. The resource person is Mr.V Karthick, Assistant Engineer, Toshni-Tek International Ltd, Chennai. The Lab Development In-charge Mr. K.Prasanna initiated and coordinated the session. The staff members took part in the training session and got benefitted. The trainees had an effective training session in operating the instruments and also interacted with the trainer and made them as familiar as in using the instruments. The training session made the staff members more comfort and gained knowledge in teaching the same to the students for this academic year 2017-18. 27. Industrial Visit to GST Road, Estancia Campus, 28th  February 2018

A site visit was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering to GST Road, Estancia Campus site, Vallacherry Village, Kanchipuram District for M.Tech Geotechnical Students. Faculties along with students were taken to the site. Static load testing which is an in situ type of load testing used in the geotechnical investigation to determine the bearing capacity of deep foundations prior to the construction of a building was explained and performed. It differs from the statnamic load test and dynamic load testing in that the pressure applied to the pile is slower. Dynamic load testing (or dynamic loading) which is a method to assess a pile's bearing capacity by applying a dynamic load to the pile head (a falling mass) while recording acceleration and strain on the pile head. Dynamic load testing is a high strain dynamic test which is applied after pile installation. The procedure is standardized by ASTM D4945-00 Standard Test Method for High Strain Dynamic Testing of Piles. It may be performed on all piles, regardless of their installation method. In addition to bearing capacity, Dynamic Load Testing gives information on resistance distribution (shaft resistance and end bearing) and evaluates the shape and integrity of the foundation element. The foundation bearing capacity results obtained with dynamic load tests correlate well with the results of static load tests performed on the same foundation element was explained.

28. Guest Lecture on Overview of Geotechnical Investigations in various Fields held,  3rd March 2018.

A guest lecture on ‘Overview of Geotechnical Investigations in various Fields’ by G. Srinivasa Rao, Deputy Manager, SAIPEM by PG Association. G.Srinivasa is a well- known expert in Geotechnical, Soil Investigation, and Ground Improvement etc. During his interaction with Faculty and students, he discussed his work in the field of Big Data Applications in Geotechnical Investigations, Numerical Modelling, and many more areas. He also shared a detailed explanation on the study of soil liquefaction, replication of sand structure in laboratory testing and soil stiffness measurements, which have applications in mitigating earthquake-related problems. Dr. K. S. Satyanarayanan, H.O.D., Dept. of Civil Engineering presented a token of appreciation to G. Srinivasa Rao after the session. 

29. Industrial Visit to Ponnerikarai, Kancheepuram District, 14th March 2018.

A site visit was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering to Ponnerikarai, Kancheepuram District for M.Tech Geotechnical Students to show Pile Casting and Pile Group Construction. Faculties along with students were taken to the site. Most of the pile foundations at the site consisted not of a single pile, but of a group of piles, which act in the double role of reinforcing the soil, and also of carrying the applied load down to deeper, stronger soil strata. The following was explained, failure of the group may occur either by the failure of the individual piles or as the failure of the overall block of soil. The supporting capacity of a group of vertically loaded piles can, in many cases, be considerably less than the sum of the capacities the individual piles comprising the group. Group action in piled foundation could result in failure or excessive settlement, even though loading tests made on a single pile have indicated satisfactory capacity. In all the cases the elastic and consolidation settlements of the group are greater than those of single pile carrying the same working load that on each pile within the group. This is because the zone of soil or rock which is stressed by the entire group extends to a much greater width and depth than the zone beneath the single pile. Adding on to the above they explained the placement of piles, the necessity of in the site and more. They cleared the doubts of students with practical examples now and then during the visit. The visit helped students get practical site experience as such big project happens once in a blue moon.

30. Guest Lecture on Integrated Water Cycle Management, 15th March 2018.

On 15th March 2018, the Department of Civil Engineering conducted a seminar on ‘Integrated Water Cycle Management’ by Professor K Baskaran, Associated Dean of Deakin University, Australia. The Chief Guest was accompanied by Mr. Piyush Chopra and Mr. Dhruv Mohan, Managers of South East Asia branch. The program started with the introduction of the Chief Guest by Dr. K. S. Satyanarayanan, Head of Civil Engineering Department, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur. This was followed by an introduction to the Chief Guest’s educational and professional background by Dr. Deepta. Professor K Baskaran is a Civil and Environmental engineer who was born in Sri Lanka. He also worked as a construction engineer for 5 years before completing his Masters.

The lecture started with the Chief Guest explaining the challenges and opportunities for engineers working in the water industry. He then went on to explain the global water challenges and global issues such as the health of the community, food security, energy utilization, and environmental protection. Then he explained the Australian water resources and how climate change affected water consumption in Australia. He presented the water management challenges and the adoption of the three-tier system in Australia along with the different measurements taken by the Australian government in order to reduce the water consumption and per capita requirement. He then explained Australia’s water management system. This was followed by him explaining the various challenges faced by India regarding water management. He concluded his lecture by showing us the critical issues faced by water in India according to UNICEF as was discussed in 2013. This was followed by an interactive session where the students were free to ask him questions regarding his lecture. Mr. Dhruv Mohan then gave the students the highlights of studying at Deakin University.

This was followed by the faculties presenting the Chief Guest with a memento for his effort on the lecture. The program ended with a vote of thanks by the office bearer of SRM Society of Civil Engineers.

31. Guest Lecture on Modular Buildings, 16th March 2018.

Dr. K.S. Satyanarayanan, Head of the Civil Engineering Department, headed the meeting and gave a brief introduction of the speaker and about the topic that was there for the hour. Dr. Shan Kumar began his seminar with a warm note sharing his experience at the site during the starting days of his career. He quoted “Engineering is the best profession in the world” and said that engineers are the ones who give themselves to society. He started discussing some of the major projects he had involved. He made a brief discussion on the precast and prestressed concrete innovation. He gave few interesting and important aspects in his works at Etihad stadium, Eureka building which is the tallest apartment in the southern hemisphere. He made the students aware of the new innovative technology of Modular construction and its structural elements. He also discussed about the Collin’s House in Melbourne. He ended his seminar by saying that the future of engineers lies in innovation and the lessons learned and improvements are the key to success. This was followed by an interactive session where the students were free to ask him questions regarding his lecture. Head of the Department gave a momento as a token of gratitude to the Chief Guest Dr. Shan Kumar and the session came to an end.

32. Valedictory Function, 28th March 2018.

The Valedictory function began with the Invocation at 10.30 A.M. followed by the welcome address given by the SRMSCE Student Secretary Ananth Nag S.Madhur. The Annual Report was then presented by Pennarasi G, Joint Secretary, SRMSCE. Dr. K. S. Satyanarayanan, HOD, then addressed the gathering by introducing the Chief Guest, Shri S.Stephen, Managing Director, Stephen Associates. Following which the website of SRMSCE was launched by Chief Guest after which a five minutes video was played which explains the activities of the department in the past academic year 2017-2018. Our chief guest then interacted with the gathering and explained us about the Construction of housing projects using modern technologies. He also explained about the different types of materials used in modern construction field which inspired the gathering. A momento was then presented to the chief guest by our HOD as a token of honor. Then, our chief guest, Shri S.Stephen, Managing Director, Stephen Associates distributed the students with the awards and appreciation certificates for their excellence in academics, activities in the department and research and publications and to all the members of SRMSCE. Sundar T, Student Secretary, SRMSCE thanked everyone on the dais by a proposing the vote of thanks.
