The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), in collaboration with the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), and the Intellectual Property Office, India, has been organizing the National Intellectual Property Awards every year since 2009, recognizing the use of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) as a strategic tool in commerce and industry. Comprising a winning amount of 1 lakh in cash, a trophy and a citation, the awards are evaluated on the basis of number of IPRs granted/ registered, growth in IPR portfolio in the past five years, leveraging of IPRs for achieving commercial goals (evaluation, licensing, launching of new products/processes associated with granted/registered IPRs), efforts for inculcating IPR culture (R&D budget, employment of human resources for R&D, collaborations with industries and universities, licensing from other sources) and contribution towards the socio-economic development of the country.

srmist-tech-lab-1st-place-2018-microsoft-hyderabadOn 3rd June 2018, a student team from SRMIST Kattankulathur bagged the 1st prize at Angelhack hackathon which was conducted as a part of Angelhack Global Hackathon series 2018 at the Microsoft campus in Hyderabad. The present year theme of “Seamless Technology” was set with the intention of giving developers the freedom to use any technology without restrictions to solve pressing problems concerning them and developers across the world. Solutions like these would enable quicker prototyping and deployment, increasing the already exponential rate of productivity of the technology industry.

Over 200 students, from experienced professionals to entrepreneurs competed for this rare opportunity. After a number of reviews and 2 rounds of extensive pitching sessions, the results were finally declared at the end of this 30 hrs long event. The Judging panel comprised of professionals from Microsoft, Amazon and major startups.

Two students; Ankur Agarwal and Krishna Maneesha Dendukuri from Next Tech Lab, were a part of this winning team. The opportunity of attending the Global HACKcelerator Program 2018 connected the students with thought-leaders and experienced entrepreneurs to help themselves in becoming more versatile while refining their ideas to build their hackathon winning prototype into a full-fledged start-up.

The team created an Artificial Intelligence-based application which helps resolve bottlenecks for machine learning practitioners. Selecting the best algorithm to be applied to a given dataset in order to achieve the highest accuracy rates was the problem. This required intensive data analysis and a lot of trial & error cycles of applying the models while consuming a lot of time and processing power for training. This tedious process makes developers treat machine learning more like alchemy than an exact science. These students built a solution which can predict the efficiency of 10 different algorithms without even running them, for a dataset given by the user and therefore, suggest the best one to be applied by saving the valuable resources like training time and GPU power and bagged the 1st place.

SRM’s Sustained Efforts to create Environmental Awareness

Every drop of water goes to make the mighty ocean. Yes, the mighty ocean that we take for granted may no longer be the same in the days to come. The theme for this year's World Environment Day is 'Beat Plastic pollution’. It has been predicted that in the years to come there would be more plastic in the ocean than fishes!!

The men are so busy with technological advancements like Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, etc that they have had its fair share of advantage but we have failed to realize the enormity of the man-made harm to the environment due to excessive use of plastics. The earth's surface and the ocean beds are being clogged. A danger that we are failing to acknowledge and therefore it is very important to take relevant measures at the earliest. Since 1974 United Nations has been creating awareness by observing June 5th as World Environment Day.

This year India is the host we have a major responsibility to stand as a role model by working towards a more sustained and safe environment. SRM as an institution has pledged to give its very best in becoming a responsible and environmentally conscious institution. On June 3rd a campaign was organized in Besant Nagar Beach which brought together the Vice-Chancellor of the Institute to staff members, researchers and a team of 50 students as members to 'start a change '.

The team showed that everyone has a responsibility towards the environment. The members were involved in educating vendors on alternates to plastics, creating awareness among children and the public and that, small efforts sustained over time can produce significant results and thus, SRM is set on its journey towards sustaining a safe environment for the future generations.
