Description of the team

Team Odyssey is a team of engineering students from various branches pursuing their Bachelor of Technology degrees from SRMIST, Kattankulathur. The team was formed on 27th October 2017 with the mission of becoming one of the finest robotic teams in the country and the DRDO Robotics and Unmanned Systems Exposition (DRUSE) 2018 being conducted by the Defence Research and Development Organisation(DRDO) provided the team with the platform to establish itself as one of the very best in front of the top leadership of the ministry of defense. In DRDO DRUSE, the participants were given fourteen different problem statements, from which the teams had to select one and build a vehicle that met its requirements. The theme selected by team Odyssey was “Surveillance of a Ship” which required the teams to build a vehicle capable of approaching a ship two kilometers from coast undetected and conduct surveillance of its deck which was twenty meters from sea level. This required the team to build an amphibious vehicle.

In the first level of screening, there were a total of 1088 teams from the entire country. The screening was done zone-wise. The south zone, of which the team was a part, saw 513 teams participate. Out of these 513 teams, 30 were selected for the second or zonal level of the competition being held in Bangalore (for the south zone). The team developed two prototypes for the competition. The first prototype was built for the zonal level of the competition and based on the feedback and advice the team got from the judges and the Director of DRDO CAIR, modifications were made to the design and the second prototype was developed for the national level.  The final vehicle has the capability of operating both underwater and in the air, autonomous flight, surveillance, object detection, and sonar avoidance. At the zonal level, the top 5 teams were selected to participate in the national level of the competition from each zone. Team Odyssey stood second in the zonal level qualifying for the national level. At the national level, the team secured the 5th rank out of the 30 teams shortlisted for the national round. At the national level, Odyssey was the only team in the entire country that qualified under the “surveillance of a ship” theme and built an amphibious vehicle. With the DRUSE competition complete, the team is going to start participating in the Intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition, a prestigious robotics competition being held annually in Michigan.

More than technical expertise and experience, Team Odyssey prides itself on its member's professionalism and work ethics and the continuously evolving and improving nature of its work environment.

Achievements and awards

  • Stood 2nd in the zonal round of DRDO DRUSE held at DRDO bhavan, Bangalore in March 2018.
  • Stood 5th in the national round of DRDO DRUSE held at DIAT, Pune in May 2018
  • Only team to reach the national level under the “Surveillance of a Ship” category.
