Paediatrics tunes a student's medical skills towards the health of infants, children and adolescents, their growth and development, and their opportunity to achieve full potential as adults. Paediatricians who care for the young are also concerned with social and environmental influences along with the health and well-being of children and their families. The young are often the most vulnerable in society and so their needs require special attention. With this in mind, Paediatricians at SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Center provide child healthcare with utmost care and affection, especially to the poor and needy belonging to the surrounding 80 and odd villages.
The well-qualified faculty includes senior and experienced paediatricians and dedicated nursing staff are always at hand to provide guidance.
Over the course period, you will be part of organized teaching programs that comprise of lectures, clinical postings, evaluation tests and more. Postgraduate courses and a Diploma NB in Paediatrics are also on the anvil.
Students are involved in the frequent health camps conducted by the department for rural children. The department uses these clinics to spread awareness on child healthcare. The department also adopts villages and provides healthcare for them. The FM radio is used to broadcast healthcare announcements.
One of the proud events in the calendar is the World Breast Feeding Week during the first week of August that the department has conducted successfully for the past three years in collaboration with UNICEF. The department marks the day by spreading awareness through posters and organizing interactive sessions with the public. Talks by eminent people are also arranged on the subject along with quizzes and contests where medical personnel participate.
The Nutrition Week was conducted in the first week of September 2007. A symposium on "Nutrition in Children" and interactive programs with mothers were the highlights of the event. The program had a great impact on people from neighbouring villages.
The department encourages both students and faculty to participate in research initiatives and to update their knowledge by attending conferences and workshops. The faculty members frequently attend CME/IMA lectures. In the area of research, various cross sectional studies and trials are underway.
