SRM University’s Department of Genetics Annual Event to celebrate the Semester Abroad Programme (SAP) was held on 10 November 2016. Aptly named SAP Genetics, the event brought together SAP alumni, prospective SAP students, parents and faculty in a confluence of anticipation and excitement.
The Department of Genetics has an impressive record of sending the most number of students abroad, to a rich array of prominent universities across the globe, for research internships that guide and shape the future career prospects of young aspiring scientists. Out of a strength of 99 students, 33 were successful in being placed this year.
Most moved were the parents of students, who spoke emotionally of the unique opportunity the university was providing their children, young budding scientists, to network with the best in the world, while still undergoing their undergraduate education.
The best included centres of excellence like Harvard Medical School , USA, Yale University, USA, Cancer Science Institute, Singapore, NUS Singapore, Tzu University, Taiwan and many more. The students who spoke about their plans showed an amazing penchant for research in alleviating human suffering like cancer and cardio vascular diseases.
Genetic Engineering has significant societal applications in agriculture, production of valuable proteins, production of vaccines and disease-resistant plants. These benefits are often realized with a lower cost, quicker production time and higher production volume than alternative solutions. And SRM continues to play a small but significant role in producing the next generation scientists who can make the world a better place to live in.
