Dr. K M Ramkumar’s research group is working on experimental diabetes research using high-end molecular and cellular biology tools, non-invasive and microscopical imaging. The pathogenic processes involving in the development of diabetes range from autoimmune destruction of pancreatic β-cells with consequent insulin deficiency to abnormalities that result in resistance to insulin action. The major contributing factor for excessive β-cell death includes cytokine stress, ER stress and oxidative stress-mediated mitochondrial damage, which creates an imbalance in redox homeostasis. Yet, β-cells have evolved adaptive mechanisms to endure a wide range of stress conditions to safeguard its potential functions. We extended our research on the detailed steps of various cell signaling pathways in response to modulators for diabetes management. We are developing molecular imaging techniques for screening signaling modulators and also studying the molecular mechanism of its impact β-cell dysfunction in diabetes. We do work the effect of cell signaling modulators on the cross-talk between pancreatic endothelial cells and pancreatic islet cells. We also work on mass spectrometry based label-free quantitative proteomics analysis to identify and quantify differentially regulated proteins in microalbuminuric and normoalbuminuric type 2 diabetic patients and investigate the associations that would reflect the progress of Diabetic Nephropathy.
