About: 

Dr. Paromita Chakraborty joined SRM Research Institute and Department of Civil Engineering as Assistant Professor in 2012.Dr. Chakraborty obtained her PhD in Natural Science with full term fellowship from Guangzhou Institute of Organic Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China in 2009. Dr.Chakraborty specializes in fate, transport and remediation of toxic environmental contaminants. Dr. Chakraborty is leading the “Environmental Science and Technology Laboratory” in SRM Research Institute.

Dr. Chakraborty and her research group is working on the environmental occurrences, source identification, fate and behavior of emerging contaminants of concern, persistent organic pollutants (e.g., organochlorine pesticides, industrial chemicals etc) and toxic metals from a specified matrix. Prime focus is on investigating the inter-media transfer/re-mobilization of emerging organic pollutants that are persistent or pseudo-persistent in nature and undergo bio-accumulation/biomagnifications. Study area includes but not limited to hotspots in Indian cities like open solid waste dumping grounds, informal electronic waste recycling workshops as well as riverine/marine environment of India. Research is carried out on modeling the long range atmospheric transport or trans-boundary movement of quantified organic contaminants and assessment of potential threat to the surrounding ecosystem. Current research initiatives target identification of cost-effective monitoring techniques and clean-up methodologies for contaminated sites.
