Inauguration & Special Lecture-12th August, 2015
Department of Civil Engineering, SRM University organized the inaugural function of SRM- ICI Student Chapter on 12th August, 2015. Prof.Dr.Arockiasamy, Ph.D, Director, Centre for Infrastructure, Dept. of Civil, Environmental & Geomatics Engineering, Florida Atlantic University was the Chief Guest.Mr. Adnan Alam, Student Secretary, delivered welcome address and Dr. R. Annadurai, Head of the Department introduced the Chief Guest to the gathering.
Dr.Arockiasamy delivered special lecture on 'Emerging Trends in Post Graduate Engineering Education- Path Forward', comparing the current scenario in India with that of US. The students were highly benefited from the lecture as it gave them insights on how to go about planning their future endeavors. Mr. Navaneethkrishnan Nambiar, Student Secretary proposed vote of thanks and concluded the ceremony.
One Day Workshop on "Concrete Mix Design"– 14th August 2015
One day workshop on “Concrete Mix Design” was conducted in association with UltraTech Cements and Indian Concrete Institute on 14.08.2015. About 50 participants including students from B.Tech and M.Tech and faculty members took part in the workshop. Dr. K. Gunasekaran, Professor, gave the welcome address and introduced the Chief Guest of the event, Mr. Balachander Nair, Assistant Vice President, Ultra Tech. He emphasized on the importance of the workshop and how we must make best use of such opportunities. Mr. K. Venkaraman, from UltraTech Cements, was also present for the release of workshop proceedings. Mr. YTVV Prasad, Assistant Vice President, Technical Services, UltraTech, presides over the conduct of the workshop.
The workshop was conducted in two phases, the theory phase and practical phase. In the theory phase, the participants were taught the principles of mix design and were asked to work on a sample problem. In the practical phase, the participants got to witness the concrete being prepared according to the design made in the theory phase. On the whole, the workshop was a success. The participants were able to understand and perform some of the very important concepts in Concrete Mix Design. Such events go a long way in promoting Academic-Industry interactions which would eventually help in the overall development of the students.
SRM Students Won India's First National Conceret Canoe Championship
Civil Engineering Department, SRM University has won India’s first National Concrete Canoe Competition in association with the Indian Concrete Institute held at IIT Madras. IIT Madras conceptualized the competition in resemblance with the ASCE Concrete Canoe Competition in USA. The competition was a unique opportunity for the students of Civil, Architecture and Ocean Engineering. Adithya Eswaran and Vishruth Krishnan, along with 12 other students of department of Civil Engineering conceived the idea under the guidance of Mr. S. Pradeep, AP/Civil.
The team systematically worked for the development of canoe design. The first challenge was to come up with the proper concrete mix. This was done by the mix design team (Adithya Eswaran, Vishruth Krishnan, ShriyaKumari, Jinesh R Sanghvi, SayanaSherif, Siddhart Satish &Namrata Solanki). The structural design team (Sai Sabarish M, Abrar Bashir Malla, Muhammad Essa Abu Bakar) took charge of the stability analysis. Around 150 structural concepts were revised for this. Peerzada Abdul Basit, student of M.Tech, Structural Engineering also helped the team for the race. Over 20 mix designs were experimented and tested to get the final concrete mix. The canoe was cast on July 12, 2015 in six hours.
Total 35 teams from six states had registered for the competition. 19 canoes were descended upon the third round in IIT Madras including IIT Bombay, NIT Trichy, VIT Vellore, SRM Easwari Engineering College and SRM University, Kattankulathur. SRM University rower team, Abrar Bashir Malla and Muhammad Essa Abu Bakar set a record of 52 seconds (Boy-Boy) to complete 50m in Concrete Canoe Racing. 10 teams were qualified for the final race including RMK College of Engineering (Two teams), Amrita College of Engineering (two teams) Coimbatore, Prathyusha College of Engineering, Poornima Group of Institutions, Jaipur, NIRMA University, Ahmadabad, SRM Easwari College of Engineering, SRM University Kattankulathur, and IIT Bombay.
SRM University team had the fastest lap in 32 seconds (Boy-Boy). In the boy-girl race SRM had another record of 42 seconds by rowers Muhammad Essa Abu Bakar &SavanaSherif.The girl-girl race of the SRM University team at the competition finished with 60 seconds by the rowers; Shriya Kumari & Sayana Sherif.The competition allotted 30% of the points to canoe racing and 70% was given to technical aspects such as report submissions, poster presentation, adequate design, research and aesthetic beauty of the canoe. Based on the overall points SRM University stood Championship ahead of the other institutions.

Industrial Visit Report – 4th September 2015 (1)
This report is a factual description of the Industrial Visit went on Friday, 4th of September 2015. A group of 40 B.Tech final year students were accompanied by Educational Consultant Mr.P.Jaganathan. The very first visit entailed visiting two bridges traversing through Urapakkam. The first bridge had already been constructed and was crucial in linking adjoining areas and playing a major role in diverting the traffic. The second bridge was under construction. Both of these were examples of composite girders.
Industrial Visit Report – 4th September 2015 (2)
The students visited a multi-storied construction project being undertaken by Malles Construction – Aashira in Perumbakkam, Chennai – 600100. A series of eleven blocks are being constructed namely A,B, C, D, E, F, G, H, J, L in three phases (First –E, F.G, L /Second – D, H, J /Third - A, B, C). The project consists of 1BHK, 2BHK, 3BHK apartments ranging from 25 to 60 lakhs. The Project involves construction using RCC framed structures.The ongoing construction provided valuable experience in the area of construction planning and execution. Porotherm bricks with considerably large number of advantages such as less weight because of the grid structure, thermal and acoustic insulation and faster constriction were used in place of conventional red clay bricks.
They are available in a variety of sizes such as 4 inches and 6 inches. Aerocon lightweight bricks were also used in place of conventional bricks. These bricks use the principle of introducing voids into the brick mass to primarily reduce the self-weight of the brick, without significant loss in the strength of the brick.
The use of RCC framed structures makes the walls of the building non load bearing in nature thereby the walls act as merely partition walls. Different blocks were under different stages of construction thereby enabling the students to witness the complete process of construction of residential buildings right from foundation to finishing works.
Industrial Visit Report – 13th September 2015 (1)
A ballast cleaner (also known as an under cutter) is a machine that specializes in cleaning the railway track ballast (gravel, blue stone or other aggregate) of impurities, so to visualize this machine, Mr. Jagannathan took set of students to Guduvanchery Railway station on 13th September 2015.Ballast cleaning removes this worn ballast, screens it and replaces the "dirty" worn ballast with fresh ballast. The advantage of ballast cleaning is that it can be done by an on-track machine without removing the rail and sleepers, and it is therefore cheaper than a total excavation. A cutter bar runs beneath sleeper level excavating all of the ballast under the sleepers to a specified, variable depth. A conveyor then moves the ballast into the cleaner, where it gets forced through a mesh by a shaking chamber. Pieces of ballast which are smaller than the mesh size fall through and are rejected; those that are bigger than the mesh are returned to the track along with fresh ballast. Some ballast cleaners have both ballast and spoil wagons attached to it, to which the materials are fed by a series of conveyor belts. Others simply undercut the ballast, and allow for a work train to come through to dump fresh ballast. This process can be done in short possessions, meaning that track life can be considerably increased.
Inudustrial Visit Report – 13th September 2015 (2)
Present day Intensity of Traffic, both Rail & Road due to the fast development of Industries and other Infrastructures, is very heavy and so it cannot the disturbed, for construction of under bridges or Canal Crossings, drainage etc by conventional i.e. open cut system. So to construct such structures, Box Pushing Technique is developed where in R.C.C. Boxes in segments are cast outside and pushed through the heavy embankments of Rail or Road by Jacking. The required thrust is generated through thrust bed, as well as line & level of precast boxes is also controlled. So to understand this concept practically, Mr. Jagannathan took set of students to Guduvanchery Crossing on 13th September 2015.
Industrial Visit Report – 23rd September 2015
This report is a factual description of the Industrial Visit to Chennai Port Trust on Wednesday, 23rd of September, 2015. A group of 10 students were accompanied by Educational Consultant Mr.P.Jaganathan to observe the ongoing project of “Strengthening of Existing Revetment at Eastern Seashore of Chennai Port” by a joint venture between Sri Pathy Associates and Emjay Construction. The major portion of the project involves establishment of tetrapod shorelines to enable coastal protection.
Seminar On “Conservation Of Heritage Structures In India”,- 18th February, 2016
SRM Society of Civil Engineers had organized a seminar on the topic “Conservation of Heritage Structures in India” by Dr.S.Thirumalini Perumal on 18th February, 2016. Dr.S.Thirumalini Perumal is a research scholar who has completed her doctorate in ‘Application of Nanotechnology in developing methodology to protect Heritage Structures’. She is currently working in many Government archaeological sites in India and performs material characterisation of the building materials used in the heritage structures. This helps in recreating the original material and can be used for retrofitting and restoration of the ancient building. Dr.K.Satyanarayanan, Head, Department of Civil Engineering, welcomed the distinguished guest. In the morning session, the speaker addressed the students and faculty members of the Civil Engineering Department and emphasised on the importance of conserving heritage structures. She also mentioned about the differences in conservation techniques adopted in India and outside India due to the complex material composition of construction materials used in ancient construction practices in India. The speaker also elaborated the methodology involved in the repair and rehabilitation of the Vadakumnathan Temple, Thrissur. During the afternoon session, students and faculty members interacted well with the Speaker about the challenges in the usage of traditional materials and methods in construction and conservation of buildings.The overall session was enlightening, as the speaker shared about her experiences in the conservation of temples and monuments in India.
At the end of the session, Dr. M.Vairamani, Dean, Department of Biotechnology, presented a memento to the speaker and expressed his heart felt appreciation for the challenging research work. Dr. K. Sathyanarayanan, summarised the ongoing research projects in SRM University with concerning usage of natural materials in concrete and put forth the idea of improving research on the area of traditional methods of construction by the PG students and faculty members of Department of Civil engineering.
Expert Lecture On 'Reuse Of Water Treatment Sludge In Post -Treatment Of Uasb Reactor Effluent'– 19th February, 2016
An expert lecture on “Reuse of water treatment on sludge in Post- treatment on UASB reactor effluent” by Dr.Abhilash. T. Nair was organized by SRM Society of Civil Engineers on 19th February, 2016. Faculty members and students from Environmental Engineering Specialization attended the meeting. Dr.K.Satyanarayanan, Head, Department of Civil Engineering, welcomed the gathering and inaugurated the session. During the lecture, the speaker deliberated the different methods of waste water disposal in the industries and the sludge treatment process. He also explained about the UASB reactor effluent and its characterization. The lecture was proven to be very inspiring and informative for the students.
Seminar On “Sustainable Construction And Energy – An European Context” – 24th February, 2016
Environmental degradation and the alarming rate pollution is a subject of major concern today. Energy production and consumption also play a major role in the increased environmental degradation. Dr. Derek Sinnot, Head, Department of Built Environment, Waterford University, a distinguished Research scholar from Ireland, addressed the students of SRM University and emphasised on Energy Conservation by Innovative building techniques. He also elaborated on initiatives towards a ‘Low-Carbon’ future.
Dr.K.Satyanarayanan, Head, department of Civil Engineering, SRM University, welcomed the distinguished guest and presented a memento to honor him. Dr.Sinnot, in his lecture, compared the energy consumption scenarios in India and Ireland and stressed on the fact that countries like India with low per-capita energy consumption should not make the same mistakes that countries like Ireland made during Industrialisation. He also mentioned that there should be an exchange of research content across the globe so that we can benefit from the outcomes of tried and tested methodologies and abstain from flawed mechanisms.The speaker also emphasized on the importance of low carbon construction, sustainable concrete and zero energy buildings.The students of M.Tech Construction engineering Management and faculty members were also addressed about the percentage of carbon-dioxide emissions and the percentage of cooling and heating required in the country. This seminar had encouraged the students to learn more about the energy efficient buildings.
Alumni Connect Interaction Session – 27th February, 2016
The SRM Society of Civil Engineers had organized an interactive session with Mr.Design AGV, as a part of Alumni Connect “Meet our Alumni” program on 27th February, 2016 at CRC Seminar hall. This was one of the series of events aimed at driving forward the exchange of views between alumni and students. The session was attended by Final year B.Tech Students, M.Tech Students and office bearers of SRM Society of Civil Engineers.
The session was inaugurated by Dr.K.Satyanarayanan, Head, Department of Civil Engineering with a brief introduction about the speaker.Mr.Desigan, Head- Design, Interface and Organisational development, SPR Construction Pvt Ltd, was one of the renowned alumnus of SRM University and his area of expertise include structural design, valuation, engineering coordination for complete building projects and process development and deployment for small and medium organisations. He started the session by expressing his deepest gratitude to the faculty members of Civil Engineering Department, SRM University who made a greater impact on his life.
During the session, the speaker discussed about the career options available for the students and the skills required for success.He also shared his experience while designing special structures and the challenges faced by an Engineer. He also mentioned about the twelve rules of life for success where he added that the power of greater thoughts will motivate one’s life. Many students interacted well with the speaker and they asked about his mindset on the first day of job, stress involved in doing the siteworks and the current civil Engineering market. The speaker responded to all the questions meticulously.
His speech gave an ample knowledge for the students and a direction in which a student should be correlated for a successful career. The session was proven to be very inspiring and informative for the students. The session was ended by the valedictory address from Dr.K.Satyanarayanan with a special appreciation for the speaker. .
National Level One Day Workshop On “Tech-Knowledge Transfer Between Institute And Industries On Concrete And Construction” – 4th March, 2016
A National level One day workshop on “Tech-Knowledge transfer between Institute and Industries on Concrete and Construction” was organized by Department of Civil Engineering, SRM University, in association with Indian Concrete Institute and SirajInternational Aluminium and Glass LLC on 4th March, 2016 at ESB Seminar Hall. The workshop was mainly focussed on stimulating the Industry – Institute Collaboration and around 300 overwhelming respondents from 25 Engineering Colleges participated in the workshop.
The workshop was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Shri. N.G.Muralidharan, Senior Vice President, Lafarge India private limited, Dr.T.P.Ganesan, Pro Vice Chancellor(P&D), SRM University, Dr.K.S.Satyanarayanan, HOD, Department of Civil Engineering, Dr.M.Lakshmipathy, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, Dr.N.P.Rajamane, Head, Centre for advanced Concrete Research, SRM University, Dr.K.Gunasekaran, Coordinator, TKI2C2 and Mr.P.Jagannathan, Coordinator, TKI2C2.
Dr.K.S.Satyanarayanan, Convener of the workshop welcomed the gathering. Dr.K.Gunasekaran, Coordinator, TKI2T2 informed the gathering about the workshop and put forward that the forthcoming lectures by academic and industrial experts will bridge the gap between industry and institute. Dr.T.P.Ganesan, Pro Vice Chancellor(P&D), SRM University presided over the function and expressed the importance of organising conferences, seminars and workshops which will supplement the knowledge of students gained through classroom lectures and laboratory experiments. He also congratulated the Head of the department of civil Engineering and the coordinators of the workshop, for organising such events in a systematic and effective manner. On the occasion of National Safety Day, the gathering took a safety pledge which insisted on the prevention of accidents.
The inaugural ceremony was followed by a session on “Safety Practices at the Construction site” by Shri. N.G.Muralidharan, Senior Vice President, Lafarge India Private Ltd. He pointed out the challenges faced by the Engineers at the construction site with respect to safety by sharing his own experiences. He insisted that the behaviour of people also should be changed to prevent the accidents. He also requested to include Safety as one of the subjects in the curriculum to make the young engineers aware of the requisites of safety measures to be followed. On behalf of the management of SRM University, Dr.T.P.Ganesan, Pro Vice Chancellor presented an award to Shri. N.G.Muralidharan on his contribution to the concrete industry.
The next session was presented by an academic expert Dr.ManuSanthanam, Professor, IIT Madras on the topic “Experimental Investigations on cracking of concrete”. His lecture focussed mainly on concrete technology and he emphasized on the problems faced on the construction site due to lack of understanding on the behaviour of concrete. The discussion encompassed the wide range of causes of cracking in concrete and the experimental investigations to quantify the cracks in concrete. Dr.M.Lakshmipathy, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering felicitated the speaker by a memento. At the end of the session, the expert was awarded by Dr.T.P.Ganesan, Pro Vice Chancellor, as a recognition for his extensive work on concrete technology.
The afternoon session started with the informative lecture on “Major facilities available in SRM University, Kattankulathur” by Dr.M.Lakshmipathy, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering. He highlighted all the major experimental facilities provided to students of Civil Engineering Department, SRM University to fulfil the requirements of curriculum and to improve the research activities.
The next session was on the topic “Concrete and Materials”, by Dr.N.P.Rajamane, Head, Centre for Advanced Concrete Research, SRM University. He gave the idea of the research carried out on different types of concrete. He also insisted the students to study the properties of new construction materials and to promote the research. The participants exchanged their thoughts and interacted well with the experts.
The last session was about “Construction Dewatering” by Er.V. Ramakrishnan, Consulting Engineer, Chennai. The speaker shared his technical expertise about the methods involved in the dewatering for the construction of foundation. Raising the point of challenges involved in the site, the speaker deliberated the importance of different methods of dewatering. Dr.K.S.Satyanarayan, Convenor, TKI2C2 honoured the speaker with a memento.
The last session was followed by a Valedictory function. Dr.K.S.Satyanarayanan, Convener, TKI2C2 put forward that the Department of Civil Engineering intends to conduct more workshops and events in the coming year that will further stimulate industry institute Collaboration to the next level and also invited the experts to join Corporate Advisory Board of SRM University. The certificates to the participants were given away by Er.V.Ramakrishnan. As the workshop drew to a close, Mr.P.Jagannathan, Coordinator, TKI2C2thanked the experts, the coordinators of the workshop and the participants. This intensive workshop was found to be quite informative and interesting for the participants.
Awareness Program On “Head Injury Management And Prevention, Importance Of Helmet” – 7th March, 2016
'It is better to be careful a thousand times than being killed once' said Dr.Gireesh, Deputy Dean, SRM Medical College Hospital during his lecture on the topic 'Head injury management and prevention-Importance of helmet' organized by Department of Civil Engineering on 7th March, 2016. This 'Be careful prevention program' during the National Safety week aims at providing an insight to the faculty members and the students about the significance of wearing helmet to avoid serious head injury. Dr.K.Satyanarayanan, Head, Department of Civil Engineering welcomed the gathering for the awareness program and introduced the chief guest. He also felt elated in inviting Dr.K.Gireesh, who is a practising Neurosurgeon and Neurophysician and a former professor of Neurosurgery.
In Phase I of the presentation, Dr.K.Gireesh elaborated on the first aid given to the injured patients and the importance of head injury management. He also narrated the consequences of head injury and the serious effects of it on different parts of the brain which leads to psychological defects. He added 'It is up to us, to protect this beautiful brain' while deliberating the functions of the brain. He then listed the series of assessments done by the doctors while examining the inuured patient in the casualty ward and showed pictures of clots in the brain which made the listeners cautious. The faculty members and students seemed to be engrossed, when the speaker explained about the consistency of the brain by comparing it to Caramel Custard Pudding. He also pointed out the time taken to bring the patient from the accident spot to the nearest hospital as 'Golden hour of trauma' which has to be reduced. He insisted the gathering to help the injured victims of accidents and rush them to the nearby hospital. As a neurosurgeon who is also responsible for creating awareness to the community, he deeply regretted the increase in number of deaths due to accidents in India. He advised the gathering to wear helmets by mentioning the slogans: “helmet or hell met”, “Drive like hell and you go to hell', 'Daydreams at the steering wheel leads to nightmares at the hospital', 'You should drive the car as if your family travels with you in the car' and 'Don’t drink alcohol and drive'.
In Phase II of the presentation, he requested Mr.Dhatchanamoorthy, who survived after serious head injury from an accident to share his experience. Mr.Dhatchanamoorthy detailed about the tragic accident and his survival after brain surgery and deeply requested the gathering to wear helmets. The speaker then played a short movie that showed the importance of wearing helmet in Phase III of the presentation which captivated the audience. He then requested the volunteers to demonstrate the use of walking cane, wheel chair, crutch and other medical mobility equipments in Phase IV of the presentation, which demonstrated the pathetic condition of a people who survived after dreadful accidents.
At the end of the session, Dr.K.Gireesh congragulated Mr.Manikandaprabhu, NSS Coordinator and his team of volunteers for the initiative they took in creating awareness on accident prevention and organizing this wonderful program. Then, The gathering took a pledge which insisted on the significance of wearing helmet. Dr.K.Satyanarayanan appreciated the speaker by pointing out his powerful way imbibing good thoughts in the mind of youngsters and thanked the NSS team for their fulfilled involvement in organizing this successful event. Dr.K.Satyanarayanan presented a memento to the speaker. The overall session was enthralling and ended with a quote by Mother Teresa: 'In life there are oppurtunities, meet it, In life there is a dream, realize it, In life there is a beauty, admire it, In life there are challenges, meet it, In life there is a duty, complete it, In life there is a game, play it, In life there are sorrows and tragedies, confront and overcome it, In life there are promises, fulfill it'
Alumni Connect Interaction Session – 12th March, 2016
'It is not something different which you do from what you have learnt, it is about applying yourself” said Mr.Sundar Narayan at 'Meet our Alumni' program organized by SRM Society of Civil Engineers on 12thMarch, 2016 at CRC Seminar hall. The session was attended by Final year B.Tech Students, M.Tech Students and office bearers of SRM Society of Civil Engineers.
Dr.K.Satyanarayanan, Head, Department of Civil Engineering introduced the speaker and admired his proficiency and daring courage to face challenges. Dr.K.Satyanarayanan presented a memento to the speaker. Mr.Sundar Narayan has worked as Site Engineer, Manager-Quality control, Synergy property development services, free consultant and life coach. He also handled construction projects of Express Avenue, IT park at Ambattur, Apartment at Perumbakkam and few other projects in Hyderabad and Kerala.
At the beginning of the session, the speaker felt delighted about the development of SRM University in the past 16 years. Then he shared his working experience as a Site Engineer, consultant and Quality head in Synergy property development services, one of the largest Project Management Consultants in India. He described about the Solar Power Plant project and the rehabilitation of 1000 years old Raagu temple near kumbakonam and felt fascinated on the concepts involved in the town planning of ancient time. He also pointed out the biggest problem faced by the Site Engineers were the language and expression and emphasized on the vital importance of documentation and communication.
'You apply what you study' said Mr.Sundar Narayan while accentuating the importance of subject knowledge and its practical application. He advised the students to learn, apply their knowledge, make mistakes and finally identify the ways to rectify it. He also pointed out that one should not hesitate to make mistakes. The students interacted well with the speaker and they were also inspired by the diligent responses from the speaker. At the end of the session, Dr.K.Satyanarayanan thanked the speaker and the DAPIT committee members for organizing the interaction session.
Interaction Session With Pro Vice Chancellor – 14th March, 2016.
'Have faith in yourself' said Dr.T.P.Ganesan, Pro Vice Chancellor (Planning and development), SRM University at the interactive meeting organized by Department of Civil Engineering as a part of “Meet our Faculty” program on 14th March, 2016. The “Meet our Faculty' series aims at promoting interaction among the experienced professors in the department of Civil Engineering and the students to enhance sharing of knowledge and wisdom. Dr.K.Satyanarayanan, Head, Department of Civil Engineering welcomed the respected Pro Vice Chancellor, faculty members and students for the meeting. He also felt elated and privileged to commence this series with our honourable Pro Vice Chancellor, Dr.T.P.Ganesan who has intense knowledge in the field of Civil Engineering.
Dr.T.P.Ganesan commenced the session with the strong appreciation for the initiative taken the department of Civil Engineering to develop interaction among faculty members and students. He shared his experiences on the load test on the bridges and the consultation works based on construction, design and safety certification, which revealed his impressive proficiency as an Engineer, Teacher and Researcher.
'Teaching is tricky' said Dr.T.P.Ganesan during his lecture, while emphasizing more on the prominence of teaching profession. He suggested the faculty members to progress towards expertise in their own specialization to become a good teacher. He also advised them to upgrade their excellence in subject knowledge and added 'Become proficient in your specialization'. He pointed out that research work and publication is indispensable to make progress as a teacher and he amended the slogan “Publish or Perish” into “Publish and Perish”. He also mentioned that the application of knowledge into practice is imperative for an engineering professional and quoted 'Teaching and Research will be of no use, unless it is applied into practice'. He opposed the statement 'Teachers should have good communication skill' and pointed out that the major obstacle during communication is the ignorance about the subject and not the language deficiency. He suggested the faculty members and students to follow the simple rules in life such as,
- •Everyone should have faith in themselves

Dr.T.P.Ganesan pointed out the major qualities for success as sincerity, involvement, devotion and hardwork and added that equanimity was also predominant to confront the failures in life. At the end of the session, Dr.K.Satyanarayanan made a thought provoking question to the Pro Vice Chancellor on how to make a positive impact on students as a good teacher. Dr.T.P.Ganesan narrated that the strong knowledge of the teachers and being compassionate to the students will definitely influence the students. The overall session has proven to be very inspiring and the faculty members found themselves captivated by the energy and enthusiasm of our distinguished Pro Vice Chancellor.
Alumni Connect Interaction Session With – 19th March, 2016
As a part of the “Meet our Alumni” programme organized by the SRM Society of Civil Engineers, Mr.B.Vengatesan, Assistant Engineer, IGCAR, Kalpakkam graced the occasion. This programme received enthusiactic response and participation from final year and third year B.Tech students as well as M.Tech students on 19th March, 2016. Dr.K.Sathyanarayan, Head, Department of Civil Engineering, introduced the Chief Guest to one and all present and admired his thinking methodology which was synonymous and quite different to what the students would otherwise get to experience from their faculty due to his getting down into the field directly. Due to his great many years of service to the Construction Industry on-site, it was quite a unique experience for the students to familiarize themselves with the know-how of the field.
The guest started off by getting the students involved in the basics of the field, on which he went on to later build the concepts. Topics as varied as why steel was the preferred reinforcement material compared to all the others available to why were the constituents of cement composed of the materials they were, were covered. This helped him to explain advanced concepts in a simple and fluid manner. The time constraint imposed acted as a dampener to one and all gathered, as the session was immensely enjoyed by one and all. He stressed the importance of the Codebooks in this industry and how it was essential for anybody trying to make a career in the industry to be absolutely thorough with their codebooks. At the culmination of the session, Dr.K.S.Satyanarayan thanked our guest for having interacted with the students and shared his valuable experience with them and presented him with a memento.
Interaction Session with Mr.Vinayak Trivedi on 22nd March, 2016
‘Our mission is to popularize the latest and the greatest software to the educators and student communit’ said Mr.Vinayak Trivedi, Global Head-Academic Programs, Bentley Systems, during the interaction session organized by SRM Society of Civil Engineers on 22nd March 2016. Dr.K.S.Satyanarayanan, HOD, Department of Civil Engineering welcomed the esteemed chief guest and his team members of the session and expressed his gratitude them for their presence in spite of their busy schedules. He then insisted the students and the faculty members of department of Civil Engineering to get benefited through this kind of interaction session which is a first step for greater progress. He also mentioned about the wide usage of software by faculty members and the research scholars in department of Civil Engineering.
Mr.Vinayak Trivedi started the interaction session by introducing his team members to the gathering. He then gave a brief explanation about the importance of software in structural analysis and design and its popularity in several countries. He also highlighted that the first aspect of Bentley systems as the introduction of the new innovative technologies like ‘Context Capture’ in Bentley software that are found to be very useful by the education community. The second aspect of Bentley Systems as mentioned by Mr.Vinayak Trivedi is to enhance the availability of software to all users which helps in supplementing the knowledge of students in new technologies.
He then described about the ‘Bentley Learn System’ that provides comprehensive learning for the software users and the books published by ‘Bentley Institute press’ He also mentioned about the e-books that are freely available to the faculty and the students and about the ‘Bentley fellow researchers’ who were involved in research projects globally with several international institutions. He then listed the major projects all over the world, where Bentley software is used.
After the introduction talk, the faculty members interacted well with the team members of Bentley systems. During the session, the speaker deliberated about the student ambassador who act as a contact point between the institution and the Bentley systems and also about the license provided by Bentley Systems to the professionals. The faculty members also interacted with Mr.Krishnan Sathya, Academic Expert, Bentley Systems, specifically about the quality of analysis results from STAAD pro and the difficulties in analyzing particular type of structural elements. At the end of the session, Dr.K.S.Satyanarayanan presented a memento to the team members.
Guest Lecture on ‘Water Pollution Management’ - 22nd March, 2016
PG Interdisciplinary association in association with ICI Student Chapter had organised a guest lecture on the topic “Water Pollution Management(Legal, administrative, scientific and technical issues)”, by Mr.A.Manoharan, Senior Environmental Consultant and Former Senior Scientist, Central Pollution Control Board on 22nd March, 2016 on the eve of “World water day”. Mr.A.Manoharan is an active member in many pollution control related communities and policy making in pollution control activities. The chief guest started the lecture with a brief introduction about the pollution status in India.
The chief guest pointed out the theme of sixteenth world water day, “Water and Jobs for all” and explained about the importance of water management in current scenario. He pointed out the world water day as an international observance and an opportunity to learn more about water related issues. The speaker also deliberated about the legal, administrative, health and scientific related global environmental issues on water and legal framework related to water pollution management. He then insisted the gathering to observe the increasing water crisis and to find out the ways to reduce water pollution.
The speaker also mentioned about the industry specific and general water quality standards that has to be followed for water pollution management. He also explained about the waste water treatment processes followed in different parts of Tamil Nadu to treat chemically impure water and also about the application of nanotechnology in water treatment. He also pointed out that the only way to achieve water pollution control is by following need based utilization and sustainable approach. Finally, he concluded the lecture with the quote: “earth satisfies everybody’s need at nobody’s greed”.
Industrial Visit To Exnora Green, Pammal On 11th April 2016
This report is a description of an industrial visit to Exnora Green, Pammal. A group of eleven M. Tech (Environmental Engineering) students accompanied with faculties Mr.J.S.Sudharsan and Mr. K. Prasanna visited the industry to observe the principle and methodology of vermicomposting and biogas production.
A brief introduction was given by the officials of Exnora Green Pammal about solid waste collection and segregation done in few wards of Pammal Municipality. They elaborated about composting for bio degradable waste in a small unit from where manure is prepared in addition to the biogas generation. They displayed the reuse of plastic items in making bags and other user products. The students learnt about the techniques of vermicomposting and Biogas production
Industrial Visit To Pallavaram Common Effluent Treatment Plant – 11th April 2016
This report is a factual description of an Industrial Common Effluent Treatment Plant, Pallavaram. This visit included 11 M. Tech (Environmental Engineering) students accompanied with faculty members Mr.J.S.Sudharsan and Mr.K.Prasanna.
The officials from the common effluent treatment plant described about the waste water and its characteristics. There are around 200 tanneries around Pallavaram amongst them; the CETP collects waste water from 122 tanneries. Explanation was given on the various treatment units established and effluent characteristics. The officials also described about the features and process flow involved in the effluent treatment process. It was an academically productive visit to the M. Tech students for their course of study.

Valedictory Function Of SRM Society Of Civil Engineers – ICI Student Chapter, SRM University – 21st April, 2016
Department of Civil Engineering, SRM University organized the valedictory function of SRM- ICI Student Chapter on 21st April, 2016. Mr. Gopan Pillai, Managing Director, HOCHTIEF India Pvt. Ltd. was the Chief Guest. Mr. Devendran R, Student Secretary, delivered the welcome address and Dr. K.S.Satyanarayanan, Head of the Department introduced the Chief Guest to the gathering. Mr. Navaneethkrishnan Nambiar read the Annual Report for the academic year
Mr. Gopan Pillai delivered a special lecture on Employability amongst graduates and the Recruiting processes adopted by corporate in present days. The students were highly benefited from the lecture as it gave them insights on how to go about planning their future roles in high-flying organizations.
Best Student Awards and awards for Cent Percent Attendance were given out to the students for both undergraduate as well as postgraduate students. Mr. Adnan Alam, Student Secretary proposed the vote of thanks and concluded the ceremony.
