International Chef's Day 2021 celebrated at SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), Kattankulathur had live food demonstrations. The theme for this year’s event was ‘Healthy food for the future’.
Organised by SRM Institute of Hotel Management (SRMIHM) and South India Chef's Association, chief guest Chef Dr. K. Damodaran, SICA- President, Celebrity Chef, Guinness World Record Holder held an interactive session with students. He shared his work experience and love for cooking healthy meals which demonstrating on how to do the tradition meen kolumbu.
“Chefs are the backbone of the food industry,” he said. He also urged senior chefs to pass down their skills and knowledge to the youngsters so that the latter may have the opportunity to get creative and innovate newer meals. “Traditional food has a lot of healthy optional medicinal values. This will help in beating COVID.”
Chef Damodaran was honoured with the Life Time Excellence Award by SRMIHM. Guest of honour, Chef N. Sheetharam Prasad, General Secretary - IFCA, Culinary Director, GRT Hotels & Resorts was honoured with the Service Excellence Award. The Vocational Excellence Award was presented to Chef Dr. M. Thirulogachander.
In his speech Sheetharam Prasad said, “Students need to do a lot of research to develop good healthy eating habits.” He urged all the upcoming chefs to practice cooking and eating local food.
SRMIHM also honoured 19 chefs from all over India who had participated in this mega event. Chef Zubin Writer, Executive Sous Chef at ITC grand Chola also held a live demonstration for students.
The fruit mixing ceremony was held during the event in which all the guests and chefs took part. The event concluded with cultural performance and prize distribution ceremony.
Also present for the event was SRMIST Registrar Dr. S. Ponnusamy, Director (Hotel Management) Dr D Antony Ashok Kumar, Vice-principal SRM IHM Lalitha Shri among others.
