SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur as part of its Unnat Bharat Abhiyan undertook two initiatives recently. The team planted about 10,000 palm seeds on the banks of Siruvanjoor lake and Nattarasanpattu lake in the Kancheepuram District. This event was inaugurated by the SRMIST Registrar Dr. S. Ponnusamy. The event was presided by Mr. Chakrapani, Headmaster of Government Middle School and Head of Parent-Teacher Association of Nattarasanpattu Government School, HoD of Civil Dr. Ravichandran and Associate Director (Campus Life), and Unnat Bharat Abhiyan nodal officer Dr. V. Thirumurugan.
Bharthidasan Trust jointly coordinated in this program in which 150 students of SRMIST, students of Nattarasnpattu Govt. School and faculty members participated in this event held from morning 6 am. The event was coordinated by S.Pradeep, faculty of Civil and Dr.Samuel, Biotech faculty of SRMIST.
SRMIST team also observed International Beach Cleanup Day. In association with National Building Research Center and National Center for Coastal Research Chennai they cleaned up the Kovalam beach. About 150 students and professors joined the clean-up drive held at Kovalam beach. Dr. V. Thirumurugan, Associate Director (Campus Life) SRMIST inaugurated the event under the chairmanship of Dr. Prabhakar Misra, Researcher, Indian Coastal Research Center.
The team went on a campaign march from the beach in Kovalam panchayat and ended at the Kovalam bus stand to raise awareness of cleanliness. They were joined by villagers, who also raised awareness on the prevention of the use of plastic, maintain environmental hygiene, and protect the cleanliness of the beach.
